Could it be that probiotic supplements do not have to be taken regularly? It seems that once a culture is established in the intestinal tract it will continue until challenged by diarrhea or antibiotics. If that is true, how long would it take to establish a culture?

    • Hi Amina– No one knows the answer to your question of how long it would take to establish a culture. Each GI tract in every individual is different and has its own microorganisms. We know that the mere fact of aging depletes the beneficial bacteria in our gut. We know from Japanese Research that by the time we’re 40, up to 50% of our beneficial bacteria may be gone. Also, we know that stress, use of prescriptive and recreational drugs, change of environment, change of diet, and especially antibiotics all contribute to decreasing numbers of good flora. If you take no other supplement, a good probiotic (see guidelines at this blog under Probiotics: Science v. Fiction) is one of the most important foundations for good health, just as exercise and diet is.
