Natren’s Gastro-pH helps your stomach during a hangover…

How exactely does Natren’s Gastro-pH (our chewable probiotic) help your stomach during a hangover? We went to Natren’s resident physician, Dr. Gene Steiner, for the answer. Here is it in somewhat-layman scientific terms…

During a hangover, you feel nausea and you feel hydro-chloric acid (HCL) in your stomach in overabundance. This is what creates the feeling of acid reflux and/or your stomach being shut down after a night of heavy drinking. Gastro-pH controls the pH of the stomach so it can take the pain away and by controlling the pH, it reduces that HCL acid in your stomach.

When you’re drunk, you decrease HCL acid in your stomach for the moment, creating a surge in your HCL the next morning. This fluctuation in the acid, or the pH of your stomach, could make you very nauseous when you eat after drinking.

To get instant relief, all you need to do is chew some Gastro-pH, which acts like a digestive enzyme, as it slowly pushes food through your stomach so that your body can try to get the as much out of the digestion process as possible. When the pH of your stomach is off, as is often the case with a hangover, food goes through your digestive system very rapidly, which causes it to be undigested. This is especially the case when your HCL acid content is not right because our stomach acid is what digests our food. If your food is undigested, it starts to putrefy in the small intestine, which is when the food becomes toxic and then causes pain plus autoimmune issues down the line from recurrent bouts of this. This is where the connection to chronic headaches during a hangover comes in, and it proves the connection between the gut and brain.

Another holistic helper for hangover issues is to take as much B complex as you possibly can. The reason why is that B complex produces Water and Co2, which helps to break down acid-Alde Hyde, which is the by-product of digested alcholol and the substance that makes you drunk. If you know you’re going to be drinking heavily one night, it might be a good idea to take 6 or 7 tablets of B complex vitamins beforehand so you’ll have that very important acid Alde Hyde reduction and in essence feel “less drunk” and “hungover” in the morning.

We hope that this is a helpful answer and explanation to why stomach issues and headaches happen when you’ve got a hangover. We also hope that this convinces to give our amazing product, Natren’s Gastro-pH a try! Stay tuned because later today we’re posting a very important scientific article about the brain-gut connection (hint: there’s more to it than you think!).

  • Where is the article you said you’d publish on Dec 2 about the Brain-Gut connection? I’d be most interested to see it.

I had C-diff about 5 years ago. By the time they admitted me into the hospital, I was dying. They treated me with flagel – said it was the only thing that might work – and it did. This is one mean bug. I’ve told everyone I know NOT to take antibiotics for a root canal – especially clintamiacin

  • Hi Betty–

Sorry for the delayed response! We appreciate you being a reader of Truth About Probiotics.com! We will be posting the article today about the brain-gut connection. Things always get crazy around here with the holidays. In reference to your comment, you were lucky that flagel (or any antibiotic for that matter) worked against your particular strain of C. diff– antibiotics certainly don’t always work. After such a high dose and strong antibiotic treatment, you should always follow up with a high quality probiotic, like Natren’s Healthy Trinity to make sure your gut is repopulated with the good bacteria, which is also killed by antibiotics. Did you follow-up with a probiotic? Have you tried Natren’s probiotics?

    In Health,

    Natasha
